Abstract This paper aims to address the export incentive mechanisms through a case study exploring the advantages of the Integrated Drawback system, in a wood flooring company. A study was conducted indicating the inputs entered into the Integrated Drawback system in Suspension mode for the laminate flooring production process. The procedures required to acquire inputs using Drawback were described and the taxes that will be suspended were described. This is an efficient public policy instrument to export incentive. The Drawback regime can be applied by any exporting company, provided that the acquired inputs are used in the manufacturing process. In addition, it shows that tax reform is important measure to increase Brazilian competitiveness in different sectors, including the wood sector.

Abstract This study intended to assess the effect of weather on the air-drying process of messassa wood (Brachystegia spiciformis Benth) in two areas of Mozambique (Machipanda and Beira city). First, the logs were sawn into 27 mm thick boards. Every five days the moisture content of the wood was determined by the control samples. For each region, the drying rate and wood quality post sawing and drying were estimated. The drying time differed between the regions under investigation, with Machipanda revealing the higher value. Messassa wood, which revealed a low drying rate (0.33% U/day), was categorized as slow drying wood. Both regions showed average final moisture content of 15.3% in the boards, with only slight variations in moisture inside the stacks. After outdoor drying, only a few defects were noted and as it was free from tensions, hence it was classified as good quality wood.

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the use of Hovenia dulcis wood to produce Edge Glued Panels – EGP. To this end, joints with dimensions of 5.0 × 31.0 × 2.5 cm (Width × Length × Thickness) were put together using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI) adhesives at a spread rate of 200 g.m-2 and the chemical characterization of the wood was performed. The strength of glued joints was evaluated through shear tests based on the procedures described by established standards. The results showed that the EPI adhesive achieved the best results in edge gluing to produce EGP. The use of PVAc adhesive did not show satisfactory results for edge gluing under these conditions. Hovenia dulcis wood is indicated for producing higher value-added wood products - (VAWP) for external use purposes.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da largura da pilha de madeira e da espessura dos separadores na velocidade de secagem, nos defeitos gerados e da distribuição de umidade na madeira de Eucalyptus spp. Foram testadas duas larguras de pilhas (1.800 e 900 mm), ambas com 3.000 mm de comprimento, construídas com separadores de 20 e 25 mm de espessura. Foram avaliados a velocidade de secagem, a distribuição da umidade final e os principais defeitos gerados após 90 dias de secagem ao ar. A redução da largura da pilha ocasionou um aumento da velocidade de secagem, sendo o resultado mais satisfatório para a pilha confeccionada com separador de 25 mm de espessura. Para a qualidade da madeira de Eucalyptus spp. após a secagem ao ar, houve influência da redução da largura da pilha, a qual reduziu a umidade final das tábuas e a variação de umidade entre as tábuas, e os defeitos gerados foram inferiores aos limites estabelecidos pela norma.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the width of the sawn timber stack and thickness of the stickers in the drying velocity, the generated defects and moisture distribution within the stack in Eucalyptus spp.. Two widths of stacks were tested (1800 and 900 mm), both 3000 mm long, constructed with 20 and 25 mm thick stickers. We evaluated the drying rate, final moisture in distribution and main defects generated after 90 days of air drying. Reducing the width of the stack caused an increase in drying velocity, the most satisfactory results for the timber stack made with 25 mm thickness. The reduction of the wood stack width influenced the quality of Eucalyptus spp. after air drying, showing a decrease of the final moisture of the lumber boards. The moisture variation between the boards and the defects generated were below the limits set by default.

RESUMO A presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito dos sistemas de desdobro aleatório e otimizado em toras de Araucaria angustifolia em diferentes classes diamétricas, para obtenção de madeira serrada numa serraria de pequeno porte. Para o efeito, foram selecionadas 60 toras, as quais foram cubadas e separadas em três classes diamétricas com 20 toras que, em seguida foram divididas em dois lotes de 10 toras, sendo o primeiro lote submetido ao desdobro aleatório e o segundo, ao desdobro otimizado. Os resultados indicaram que o desdobro otimizado foi mais satisfatório e a classificação diamétrica ocasionou aumento do rendimento em madeira serrada nos dois sistemas de desdobro. Os modelos ajustados para predição do rendimento, em função da conicidade das toras, foram significativos e satisfatórios principalmente no sistema de desdobro otimizado, o qual teve altos coeficientes de determinação ajustados em relação ao sistema de desdobro aleatório.

ABSTRACT This research was developed in order to assess the effect of aleatory breakdown and optimized breakdown systems of the logs of A. angustifolia, using different diametric classes to obtain lumber in a small sawmill. For this, 60 logs were selected, cubed and separated in three diameter classes, with 20 logs each, which were additionally divided in two lots of 10 logs, being the first lots subjected to aleatory breakdown, and the second for optimized breakdown. The results indicated that the optimized breakdown was satisfactory; in addition, the diametric classification caused an increase in yield lumber on both breakdown systems. The adjusted models for the yield prediction due to the taper of the logs were significant and satisfactory, especially in the optimized breakdown system that had high determination coefficients adjusted, regarding the aleatory breakdown system.

RESUMO Este trabalho é a continuação da pesquisa de Klitzke & Batista (2010), e teve como objetivo principal avaliar se a qualidade da madeira na metodologia da secagem drástica a 100 °C corresponde àquela da secagem convencional. Utilizou-se madeira de 11 anos de Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus dunnii, que foram secas conjuntamente em uma câmara-piloto convencional, realizando-se três repetições. Os defeitos de secagem avaliados foram rachaduras de superfície e de topo, encanoamento e colapso, dos quais foi produzido um escore médio por espécie, que foi comparado com o escore de defeitos do ensaio de secagem drástica, e também com a densidade básica e a contração volumétrica total da madeira. Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus saligna tiveram a melhor qualidade de secagem. Foi rejeitada a hipótese de se poder utilizar o escore de defeitos do ensaio de secagem drástica como forma de prever a qualidade da secagem convencional das espécies estudadas.

ABSTRACT This research is a continuation of Klitzke & Batista (2010) work. The main objective was to assess whether the wood quality in the methodology of drastic drying test at 100 °C corresponds to that of conventional kiln drying. It was used 11 years old Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus dunnii woods, which were kiln dried together in the same batch in a pilot scale kiln, doing three repetitions. Drying defects evaluated were end and surface cracks, cupping and collapse, which generated a mean score by species, which was compared to the score of defects of the drastic drying test, as well as to the basic density and the total volumetric shrinkage. Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna had higher wood quality in conventional drying than Eucalyptus dunnii. It was rejected the hypothesis of using the score of defects in drastic drying test as a way of predicting the quality of conventional kiln drying.

RESUMO A indústria brasileira comumente seca diferentes espécies de eucalipto em uma mesma carga de secagem convencional, seja pela dificuldade de identificação das espécies, híbridos e clones, seja para melhor utilizar o equipamento. No entanto, essa prática não é recomendada na literatura específica. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a qualidade da secagem convencional conjunta da madeira de Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus grandis eEucalyptus dunnii oriundas de plantios clonais. Para tal, foi realizada a secagem de três cargas com as três espécies conjuntamente em uma câmara-piloto de secagem convencional. Os critérios utilizados para analisar-se a qualidade da secagem foram: umidade final, rachaduras de topo, rachaduras de superfície, encanoamento, colapso, gradiente de umidade e tensões de secagem.Eucalyptus grandis apresentou a melhor qualidade de secagem, seguido pelo Eucalyptus saligna, e ambas as espécies possuem potencial para serem secas conjuntamente. Eucalyptus dunnii apresentou baixa qualidade de secagem, esta espécie não deve ser seca conjuntamente com Eucalyptus grandis eEucalyptus saligna. A densidade básica e a retratibilidade foram bons critérios para a expectativa de qualidade da secagem de Eucalyptus spp., em que espécies menos densas e mais estáveis dimensionalmente apresentaram melhor qualidade de secagem. O programa de secagem utilizado deve ser modificado para a secagem futura dessas espécies, notadamente no tocante aos períodos de uniformização e condicionamento, que foram considerados insuficientes.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian industry commonly dries different species of eucalypt in a same load because of the difficulty of identifying the species, hybrids and clones, and also by optimizing the use of the kiln. However, this practice is not recommended in the literature. The aim of this work was to verify the quality of grouped conventional drying of Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus grandisand Eucalyptus dunnii from clonal plantations. To this end, three loads were dried with the three species together in a pilot conventional dry kiln. The criteria used to analyze the quality of dried wood were final moisture content, end checks, cupping, collapse, moisture gradient and drying stresses. Eucalyptus grandis showed the best quality of drying, followed by Eucalyptus saligna, and both species have potential to be kiln dried together. Eucalyptus dunnii had the worst quality of drying, and should not be kiln dried together withEucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna.The basic density and shrinkage were good parameters for the expected quality of the drying of eucalyptus species, in which less dense and more dimensionally stable species had better quality of drying. The drying schedule used must be modified to further drying of these species, especially regarding to uniformity and conditioning periods, which were considered insufficient.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a durabilidade natural das madeiras de Eucalyptus dunnii, Eucalyptus robusta, Eucalyptus tereticornis e Hovenia dulcis submetidas ao ensaio de apodrecimento acelerado em laboratório com os fungos Gloeophyllum trabeum, causador de podridão parda; e Trametes versicolor, causador de podridão branca. As amostras permaneceram durante 12 semanas em contato com os fungos e após calcularam-se as porcentagens de perda de massa, classificadas quanto ao grau de resistência natural e avaliadas quanto ao índice de susceptibilidade ao ataque. As médias dos resultados foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de significância. A madeira de Eucalyptus robusta foi classificada como resistente e Hovenia dulcis como não resistente para ambos os fungos. O índice de susceptibilidade ao ataque indicou que as espécies estudadas apresentaram valores aceitáveis, sendo mais resistentes ao ataque dos fungos em relação às espécies de referência (Pinus sp.; Cecropia sp.).

This study aimed to evaluate the natural durability of Eucalyptus dunnii, Eucalyptus robusta, Eucalyptus tereticornis and Hovenia dulcis woods subjected to accelerated testing in laboratory with rotting fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum, causer of brown rot; and Trametes versicolor, causer of white rot. The samples remained 12 weeks in contact with the fungi, after that, we calculated the percentages of mass loss, classified according to the degree of natural resistance and assessed according to the rate of susceptibility to attack. The averages of the results were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance level. Eucalyptus robusta wood was classified as resistant and Hovenia dulcis wood was classified as non-resistant to both fungi. The index of susceptibility to attack indicated that the species studied present acceptable values and that they are more resistant to the attack of fungi compared with reference species (Pinus sp.; Cecropia sp.)

É importante desenvolver tecnologias de secagem para a madeira de Eucalyptus grandis, que é uma das espécies mais plantadas do gênero no Brasil e desempenha papel significativo no abastecimento da indústria madeireira nacional. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar a secagem convencional da madeira de três clones de Eucalyptus grandis. Os objetivos específicos foram comparar os comportamentos entre: i) os defeitos do ensaio de secagem de amostras de pequenas dimensões com os defeitos da secagem convencional de tábuas em câmara; e ii) as propriedades físicas e a qualidade da secagem. Foram coletadas cinco árvores de 11 anos de cada um dos clones de Eucalyptus grandis, utilizando-se apenas tábuas tangenciais da primeira tora. Foram determinadas a densidade básica e a contração total da madeira, bem como foi realizado o ensaio de secagem de amostras de pequenas dimensões a 100 °C. Procedeu-se à secagem convencional em câmarapiloto, em que foram avaliados as umidades inicial e final, o gradiente de umidade na espessura, as tensões residuais e os defeitos de secagem. Utilizou-se a metodologia de escore de defeitos para comparar o comportamento entre os defeitos do ensaio de amostras de pequenas dimensões e aqueles da secagem convencional. Destaca-se que o programa de secagem utilizado foi muito severo para a madeira analisada, resultando em grande quantidade de tábuas com defeitos. O comportamento entre os defeitos do ensaio de amostras de pequenas dimensões e os defeitos de tábuas na secagem convencional foi diferente, não havendo correspondência.

It is important to develop drying technologies for Eucalyptus grandis lumber, which is one of the most planted species of this genus in Brazil and plays an important role as raw material for the wood industry. The general aim of this work was to assess the conventional kiln drying of juvenile wood of three clones of Eucalyptus grandis. The specific aims were to compare the behavior between: i) drying defects indicated by tests with wood specimens and conventional kiln-dried boards; and ii) physical properties and the drying quality. Five 11-year-old trees of each clone were felled, and only flatsawn boards of the first log were used. Basic density and total shrinkage were determined, and the drying test with wood specimens at 100 °C was carried out. Kiln drying of boards was performed, and initial and final moisture content, moisture gradient in thickness, drying stresses and drying defects were assessed. The defect scoring method was used to verify the behavior between the defects detected by specimen testing and the defects detected in kiln-dried boards. As main results, the drying schedule was too severe for the wood, resulting in a high level of boards with defects. The behavior between the defects in the drying test with specimens and the defects of kiln-dried boards was different, there was no correspondence, according to the defect scoring method.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden et Cambage. Foram determinadas as seguintes propriedades físicas: massa específica aparente a 12 e 0% de umidade, massa específica aparente básica e os coeficientes de contração, além das propriedades mecânicas, por meio dos ensaios de flexão estática, compressão paralela às fibras, cisalhamento e dureza, para a idade de seis anos. Com base nos resultados obtidos na determinação das propriedades físicas, a madeira de E. benthamii, na idade estudada, pode ser classificada como moderadamente pesada e dimensionalmente instável. Em relação às propriedades mecânicas, de modo geral, a espécie apresentou baixa resistência, o que possivelmente está relacionado com a grande proporção de madeira juvenil presente no material estudado.

The present study aimed to assess the physical and mechanical properties of Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden et Cambage wood. The following physical properties were determined: apparent density at 12 and 0% moisture content, basic density, and indices of contraction. Mechanical properties were determined through tests of static bending, compression parallel to the grain, shear, and hardness in six-year-old wood. Based on the results obtained in the determination of physical properties, E. benthamii wood at the age studied can be classified as moderately heavy and dimensionally unstable. The species showed low resistance with respect to mechanical properties, which can be related to the large amount of juvenile wood observed in the material studied.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar dois modelos de desdobro (radial e tangencial) de madeira de Eucalyptus cloeziana e Eucalyptus saligna, numa serraria portátil, para se eleger o qual proporciona maior rendimento em madeira serrada. Para o estudo, foram selecionadas aleatoriamente 24 árvores com 27 anos de idade, sendo 12 árvores de cada espécie e divididas em duas classes diamétricas: 30-34,5 cm e 35-39,5 cm. As árvores foram derrubadas e traçadas em toras de 3,4 m de comprimento, sendo produzidas tábuas de 25 mm de espessura nominal. Os resultados obtidos demostraram que, para as duas classes diamétricas de espécies, o modelo de desdobro tangencial obteve melhor desempenho em relação ao desdobro radial, em termos de rendimento. Pode-se concluir-se que o Eucalyptus cloeziana obteve melhores rendimentos, com maior destaque para o modelo de desdobro tangecial em relação ao modelo radial. Estas espécies, nas condições estudadas, têm potencial para ser uma fonte alternativa e segura para produção de madeira serrada, substituindo algumas espécies nativas, ora sob pressão, em Moçambique.

The present study aimed to evaluate two sawing models (radial and tangential) for Eucalyptus saligna and Eucalyptus cloeziana in a portable sawmill in order to select which one provides the highest lumber yield. To this end, twenty-four trees with 27 years of age were randomly selected: twelve of each species divided into two diameter classes, 30-34.5 and 35-39.5 cm. The trees were felled and cut in logs of 3.4 meters, and clapboards of 25 mm in nominal thickness were produced. The results obtained showed that, for both diameter classes in both species, the tangential sawing model provided higher yield compared with the radial sawing model. We conclude that lumber of satisfactory quality can be produced under the conditions studied and that these species present good potential to be used as an alternative and safe source of lumber production, being able to substitute some native species from Mozambique.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a influência do campo eletromagnético sobre o comportamento de cupins de madeira seca (Cryptotermes brevis), para posterior utilização em tratamento de infestações em peças de madeira. Diferentes cupins foram submetidos a um campo eletromagnético máximo, sob distintas temperaturas. A partir dos resultados, observou-se que os cupins são capazes de sentir a presença de um campo eletromagnético e responder a seus estímulos, por meio de taxia negativa (afastamento da fonte do campo) e movimentações de corpo, que se adaptam às variações de campo ao longo da região de exposição, como uma consequência da Lei de Faraday de indução magnética e da hipótese ferromagnética, a qual se baseia na presença de partículas magnéticas no organismo que funcionam como sensores de campos. O campo eletromagnético fez, ainda, com que os cupins tivessem descontrole de segmentos e de membros acessórios.

This paper aimed to verify the influence of the electromagnetic field on the behavior of drywood termites (Cryptotermes brevis) for subsequent use in treating infestations of timber pieces. Different termites were subjected to a maximum electromagnetic field under different temperatures. The results showed that termites are able to sense the presence of an electromagnetic field and respond to its stimuli by means of negative taxis (removal of the field source) and body movements to suit field variations over the area of exposure, as a consequence of Faraday's law of magnetic induction and ferromagnetic hypothesis, which are based on the presence of magnetic particles in the body which act as field sensors. Also, the electromagnetic field caused the termites to present uncontrolled segments and accessory limbs.

Esta pesquisa objetivou determinar o rendimento em madeira serrada de pinus para duas metodologias de desdobro em classes diamétricas, ajustando-se equações para a estimativa destes rendimentos. Utilizaram-se toras de Pinus taeda, com diâmetros variando entre 18 e 44 cm, separadas em classes diamétricas. As toras foram desdobradas em tábuas de três larguras e uma espessura. Utilizaram-se duas metodologias de desdobro, convencional e programado, com modelos de corte específicos por classe. Os rendimentos variaram de 37,03% a 46,75% (desdobro convencional) e de 44,93% a 63,58% (desdobro programado). Os coeficientes de determinação (R²) foram considerados altos, permitindo se estimarem estatisticamente os rendimentos pela equação ajustada. O rendimento foi influenciado pelo sistema de desdobro utilizado. A classificação das toras e os modelos de corte proporcionaram aumento do rendimento. Os modelos estatísticos obtidos podem ser utilizados para a estimativa do rendimento nos dois sistemas de desdobro utilizados.

This study aimed to determine the yield of pine lumber for two sawing methods and different diameter classes with equation adjustment for these estimated yields. We used logs of Pinus taeda in five diameter classes ranging between 18 and 44 cm. The logs were processed in boards with three width and one thickness dimensions. Two sawing methods: conventional and programmed were used for each diameter class. The yields in lumber ranged from 37.03% to 46.75% for the conventional sawing method and from 44.93% to 63.58% for the programmed sawing method. The coefficients of determination (R2) were considered high, allowing statistical estimate of the yields based on adjusted equation. Lumber yield was directly affected by the sawing methods used. The classification of the logs and the sawing methods contributed to increased yield. The statistical models obtained could be used to estimate lumber yield for the two sawing methods used.

Este trabalho teve o objetivo de analisar o custo de produção de madeira serrada nos sistemas de desdobro aleatório e programado, para diferentes classes diamétricas. Foram selecionadas 80 toras de Pinus spp. com diâmetros que variaram de 24 a 33 cm, formando quatro classes diamétricas com 20 toras por classe. Em cada classe, as toras foram separadas em dois lotes com dez unidades, sendo que o primeiro lote foi submetido ao desdobro aleatório e o segundo lote foi submetido ao desdobro programado. As análises de custos revelaram que, no sistema de desdobro programado, houve redução nos valores obtidos.

This research aimed to analyze the production cost of lumber using randomized and programmed cutting systems for different diameter classes. We selected 80 logs of Pinus spp with diameters ranging from 24 to 33 cm, divided in four diameter classes, with 20 logs per class. In each class, the logs were separated in two lots of 10 units - the first batch was subjected to randomized cutting and the second batch was submitted to programmed cutting. The cost analysis showed that there was reduction in values when the programmed cutting system was used.

Nesta pesquisa, pretendeu-se avaliar uma metodologia de desdobro de toras que envolve a classificação destas e estabelecimento de modelos de corte para diferentes classes diamétricas aplicadas em um programa de computador MaxiTora visando à otimização no desdobro de toras. Para tal, foram selecionadas 80 toras de Pinus sp com diâmetros que variaram de 24 cm a 33 cm, formando quatro classes diamétricas com 20 toras por classe. Em cada classe diamétrica, as toras foram separadas em dois lotes com 10 unidades, onde no primeiro lote todas as toras foram misturadas e submetidas ao desdobro convencional e o segundo lote, com as classes devidamente separadas, submetidas ao desdobro programado, de acordo com a simulação obtida no programa para cada classe. Para cada tora, foi cronometrado o tempo efetivo de desdobro até que a última peça de madeira fosse refilada. Para o sistema de desdobro convencional, a eficiência operacional alcançada variou de 9,71 a 11,22 m³/operário/turno e a média geral correspondeu 10,18 m³/operário/turno. No sistema de desdobro programado, a eficiência operacional alcançada variou de 7,78 a 8,99 m³/operário/turno, e a média geral correspondeu a 8,07 m³/operário/turno. Os valores da eficiência no desdobro de toras aumentaram com o aumento do diâmetro da tora, mantendo constantes outros fatores como o tempo de desdobro. A eficiência média geral da serraria, alcançada, em decorrência do desdobro programado, foi menor em relação à eficiência média geral alcançada com o desdobro convencional. A eficiência da serraria, alcançada no desdobro programado, foi reduzida, pela falta de experiência dos operadores das máquinas.

This research evaluated a methodology of cutting logs that involves both their classification and the establishment of cutting models for different diametrical classes. The software MaxiTora was employed aiming the optimization of cutting logs. A total of 80 logs of Pinus sp had been selected with diameter that varied from 24 cm to 33 cm, gathering four diametrical classes with 20 logs each. In each diametrical class, the logs had been separate in two lots with 10 units, where the first lot was submitted to conventional cutting and the second lot was submitted to the programmed cutting. For each log the effective time of cut was recorded until the last lumber piece was edged. For the conventional cutting system, the efficiency reached from the same cutting system varied from 9.71 to 11.22 m³/operator.day and the general average corresponded to 10.18 m³/operator/day. In the programmed cutting system, the efficiency reached through the same cutting system varied from 7.78 to 8.99 m³/operator.day, while the general average corresponded the 8.07 m³/operator.day. The general average efficiency achieved in the programmed sawing process was smaller in relation to general average efficiency obtained with conventional sawing process. The sawing efficiency achieved in the programmed sawing process was reduced due to the lack of experience of machine operators.
